Jomsom lies at 2,700 meters above sea level, in an area that bridges the Himalayan foothills and the Tibetan Plateau. Jomsom is the main commerce and administrative center of Nepal’s Mustang region.Jomsom is best known for its airport that offers a quick entry or exit to the valley with regular daily flights from Pokhara. The strong winds that blow up the valley prevents flights from taking off from Jomsom after 11 a.m. Jomsom can also be considered a place to use as a base for exploring the upper part of the Kali Gandaki region. There are numerous accommodation options including a new high-class resort complex. Jomsom Muktinath Trek is one of the classic treks of Nepal which takes us to the wonderful regions in Annapurna like Poonhill, Kagbeni, Jomosm, Kaligandaki gorge along with the sacred temple called Muktinath. It makes you walk through a rugged trail seeing the contrast of Himalayan adventure, landscape like desert and feel the amazing creation of God.
Muktinath is believed to be the holy place by Hindus where Guru Ripoche had meditated on his way to Tibet. Walking along the deepest gorge in the world called Kaligandaki, the windy valley, monasteries, mountain vistas and unique temples provides with the unique and awesome feeling experienced ever in the life.
An alternative to Jomsom as a base for the trek is the village of Kagbeni which lies a further two-hour walk up the valley. Kagbeni is not as commercialized as Jomsom and certainly much quieter. This is the furthest trekkers are allowed to go towards Upper Mustang without a special permit and an accompanying Environmental Officer.
